Our requirements for submitting short stories and poems to Humdinger are relatively simple. First, let's explain what we seek at Humdinger.

We are writers and not just editorial staff, so we at Humdinger understand that business formalities discourage even the best writers. Luckily, we have no desire to keep you from submitting to us. Our guidelines are flexible—even in genre—to encourage your creativity and loyalty.

Which genres do we prefer?

We want unforgettable fiction. Let me illustrate: if I go to a restaurant and forget about it the next day, the food, service, or atmosphere lacked quality. On the other hand, you don't forget a great restaurant. We want the kind of writing that stays with Humdinger readers for days, weeks, years later.

What we REALLY love . . .

Novelty. Write something that differs from the norm. Don't let industry standards and categories define your creativity.

What we don't do . . .

We don't do erotica or excessive violence. We publish literary fiction and poetry, which differs from bathroom and bedroom fiction and poetry. Also, one should remember that the Internet is a public domain and Humdinger tries to respect that. As always, editors must battle it out and determine when great fiction overrides a taboo.

Create a new genre.

A fairly uncommon genre would be Romantic Science Fiction/Fantasy.Consider that. How can you manipulate genre to create your own style?

Coin new vocabulary words.

Shakespeare coined new words and whether he was the first to use them didn't matter; he's the one who wrote them, so he got the credit. Such should be your case.

Length Requirements

Any length will be considered, though we suggest less than 2,000-3,000 words. This is so that we can have several writers in one issue. Consider serializing longer works throughout several issues. This includes poetry, which can easily meet the same length requirement, or much less.

Format

We use Microsoft Word and are familiar with other word processing programs. However, we need to easily read your work. We prefer submissions as attachments now. Previously, we had requested submissions in the body of e-mails, but that resulted in butchered punctuation symbols. So, submit works as attachments to an e-mail.

If you wish to use a crazy font and we can, we will. Just focus on your reader easily interpreting the font. We try to print in 14 pt. for our readers with visual difficulties. No one should be deprived of an unforgettable read! Let us know if you wish to use a specific font. Otherwise, we often use Times Roman, because it conserves space.

Language

We will edit out instances of the Lord's name in vain. Period. Up until now, a writer who used the Lord's name in vain was considered gutsy. We think they're taking a risk that we don't want to take, like swimming in a silver swimsuit during a thunderstorm. You can't fault us for not having lightning-proof sunscreen . . . If you submit to Humdinger, then you agree to this stipulation.

And Finally . . .

Have someone proofread your work for spelling and punctuation errors before submitting to us or anyone else. Editors usually shy away from major editing jobs, because of the quantity of highly-skilled writers available. If you have no one to proofread, or no one you trust, at least, and you're sure you've got something special, go ahead and give us a try. This is one of the ways Humdinger differs from other publications.

Remember,

we at Humdinger hope to inspire you to greater writing. We consider it an honor to read others' work. If we reject your first submission, then send a different one.

Let nothing keep you from attaining your dreams.
